Avoid the Noise

The last few weeks have been challenging personally with keeping up with my routine both at home and at work. Sick with a constant cough preceded by a sick kid and still more sickness running through the family was the start. Blame the weather, daylight savings time, my Zodiac sign and the position of Venus…. I dropped off, I’m feeling better and now I’m getting back on track. Thanks Brighton for the accountability on not making the writing a priority. Someone out there is following along! Time to show back up.

So where to now, what conviction lies out there waiting to be explored? April mentioned the negative sentiment of social media lately specifically around the issues in the world and how those have clashed with our everyday lives. Higher gas prices, higher everything prices, supply chain issues, COVID political opinions and on and on. Thankfully for me, not much of that going on in my LinkedIn world and it got me thinking. We spend so much time and energy on things we have no control over and for what? A like or more followers. I believe you reap what you sow. Earl Hickey from My Name is Earl - “Do good things and good things happen to you. Do bad things and it'll come back to haunt you.” We should worry about what we put in the universe, what we control. Our words, actions and behaviors and let that take center stage and collectively we solve the problem. Do you really care about who caused oil prices to rise, do you even know why the price has increased or is your sole intention to bitch. And I’m not saying to live under a rock, be informed and have an opinion an objective opinion.

We forget how much impact small things can have, a slight bias, an environment we create. I would hope the greater good of social media is to create positive in the world and bring us closer together. Yet with everything else human nature sets out to use it as a tool to exploit an agenda and now this is in your life. I think about my kids and being connected to such a world someday. Their friends on social media, their influencers, what will be their agenda and how will my children cope. Can April and I shield them from this, and how do I instill something in them that will counteract this. And honestly how to protect our own heart from divisiveness, anger and things that overall go against our core values.

How will you show up in the world and what will your message be?
